Quick Copy
You can use modified or unmodified M2 mouse buttons to copy or move text
between EVE and other Motif applications without having to use the
clipboard.
Mouse keys Effects or usage
----------------------------------------------------------------------
M2CLICK (Primary Paste) Copies the selection to your
pointer location---for example:
1. Select text in EVE (see help on SELECT).
2. Point to where you want to copy the selection.
3. Click M2.
You can copy the selection elsewhere within EVE.
(See usage notes below.) You can also use
CTRL/M2CLICK for this operation.
ALT/M2CLICK (Primary Cut) Moves the selection to your pointer
location and then erases the selection from its
original location. To insert the text erased from
EVE, use RESTORE SELECTION or RESTORE BOX SELECTION.
M2DRAG (Quick Paste) Creates a secondary selection which
appears underlined. When you release M2, the
secondary selection is copied to the destination
cursor. You can also use CTRL/SHIFT/M2DRAG to
perform this operation. (See usage notes below.)
ALT/SHIFT/M2DRAG (Quick Cut) Creates a secondary selection which
appears underlined. When you release M2, the text is
erase from its original location and moved to the
destination cursor. To insert the erased text, use
RESTORE SELECTION or RESTORE BOX SELECTION.
Usage notes:
o You can copy or move the primary selection or the secondary selection.
A primary selection is typically created by SELECT and appears in
reverse video, or by BOX SELECT and appears in bold video.
o M2CLICK may let you copy the primary selection between EVE and other
Motif applications depending upon which primary selection model is set
in the applications you use.
If the applications use the "selection-based" model, you can copy
selections between EVE and the other applications. In this model you
move the ownership of the primary selection from one application to
another by explicitly making a selection in the other application. This
is EVE's default setting, and is usually the default setting for Motif
applications. You can set this mode with the SET SELECTION GRAB
SELECTION command.
If any applications use the "focus-based" model, you cannot copy
primary selections between EVE and those other applications. In this
model you move the ownership of the primary selection from one
application to another by moving input focus to the other application.
You can set this mode with the SET SELECTION GRAB FOCUS command.
o M2DRAG may let you copy the secondary selection between EVE and other
applications depending upon which keyboard focus model is set.
If the focus policy is "explicit", you can copy secondary selections
between EVE and the other applications. In this model you move the
input focus from one application to another by selecting the other
application's window. This is the default Motif setting.
If the focus policy is "implicit", you cannot copy secondary selections
between EVE and the other applications. In this model you move the
input focus from one application to another by moving the pointer into
the other application's window.
Using the explicit focus policy, you copy text between EVE and other
applications using M2DRAG without having to make a primary selection in
EVE and without using the clipboard. For example, if you are using MAIL
in one window and MAIL has the input focus, you can copy text from EVE
to MAIL as follows:
1. Use the SET SELECTION GRAB SELECTION command to insure EVE moves
ownership of the primary selection only when you make a new
selection.
2. Point to the start of the text you want to copy.
3. Press and hold M2 and drag the mouse to select the text.
This creates a secondary (underlined) selection in EVE.
4. Release M2. This copies the selection to your current position
in MAIL or whichever application has the input focus.
