  Accessing Files and Directories

A file contains information that can be used by you or your
computer. Each file is identified by a file name, a file type,
  and a file version number.

For example, THIS.DAT;2 identifies a file with the file name

THIS, the file type DAT, and a file version number of 2.

Files are contained in directories. The file name, type, and
version of the files in a directory are recorded in a special
kind of file called a directory file. When you list the contents
of a directory, the system reads the directory file to obtain
the names of the files in that directory. You cannot edit a
  directory file.
